The Rock
I was commissioned to paint a bear on a large rock in Northern MN at a cabin that at the time was under construction.
The rock was located at the end of the driveway, having recently been moved there from another part of the property by a backhoe.
The rock was pretty dirty, as you might imagine. You may wonder why this is memorable to me. It's memorable because there was no running water on site. I knew I couldn't paint the rock unless it was clean otherwise come the first rainfall, the dirt and paint would all wash away, bubble, or flake off. The homeowner aware of the obvious obstacles and risks, still wanted me to do everything that I could to get it done.
Once disclaimers were discussed, I went to work. I had to get water by the bucketful from the lake down the road. Oh, I almost forgot to mention there was no power either. What I would have done for a power washer.
Eight hours later the rock was scrubbed (as much as a person can with the resources), dried, and painted. The homeowner loved it! This was definitely a day to remember...
That was five years ago. I painted the rock in 2006. It still looks pretty good but has some wear. Not bad after 5 years, I guess. The homeowner has contacted me and we're going to repaint the rock this summer. This time I'll be using a power washer. You can count on it.
